Review — Learn Our History

Political correctness has sadly altered the history that many children learn today.

Mike Huckabee has helped to start a company with resources to combat this sometimes inaccurate view of the past and to help build pride in our country and our heritage. These videos can easily help your student gain an understanding of historical events while taking pride in our national heritage.

This particular video looks at the challenges the world faced leading up to World War II. Both in Europe and Japan, Learn Our History shows the attacks on freedom and the need for America to take a stand.

Product: Origins of World War II by Learn Our History

Details: A DVD that uses five cartoon teenagers to travel through time to get a behind the scenes look at the events and personalities instrumental in the origins and duration of World War II.

Price: $19.95 plus s/h or take advantage of their free gift offer and get it for $9.95 plus s/h. This second option also signs you up to receive a new video each month for $11.95 plus s/h until you cancel your order. You can also choose video streaming and not pay shipping. Scroll down their preview page for all the pricing details.

A significant event that took place less than a hundred years ago can still seem like ancient history to young students. This video series helps it come alive and is a great supplement to any study of this time period. You might want to try to find a veteran from WWII that could help the kids see even more clearly how close this is to them and to take pride in our history and our country today.

WWII veterans are getting more scarce as the years go by, but this video is readily available. My kids enjoyed watching this round the world look at some of the events of WWII. We have not studied modern history extensively, so much of this was new material to them. It gave them a great overview of the causes, people, and events without bogging them down in details or in too many of the gruesome facts. Even my 2 year old asked to watch the “airplane” movie again.

It is a short film, but packed with information. The cartoon characters were a little predictable, but they got the job done, and taught the lessons well. We felt this was definitely worth the time and we enjoy having it around as a resource and supplement to our history program.

Disclosure: I received this product free from Learn Our History for the purpose of posting a review. This review contains my honest opinions and experiences.

Photo shoot at DuPage Children’s Museum

Is your child one of the new faces of DCM?

We’re updating DCM’s look for our marketing materials and will be holding a professional photo shoot in the Museum on Friday, 9/21 and Saturday, 9/22 to capture the spirit of curiosity, creativity and discovery experienced by our young visitors. Candid and portrait-style photos will be taken of children playing with exhibits, learning with their families and engaging with staff and volunteers.

You can help!

Visit the Museum on one or both of those days to participate and become a part of the DCM story. The Museum will be looking fantastic after its annual shutdown for maintenance and upgrades, with new exhibit areas to discover and explore. Come check it out and bring your best smiles!

If you want to participate, join our event on Facebook or Google+. Also, please take a minute to fill out this form to help us have the best photo shoot possible.

We hope to see you there!

Unique homeschool soccer opportunity

Received this via email and Amy said she would love to have this shared with a broader audience. Please contact her directly for more information.

As many know, I am the founder of the Homeschool Youth Soccer League
(HYSL). I have been approached by a gentleman from Chicago Fire, the
professional soccer league right here in Chicago (
http://www.chicago-fire.com/) about a wonderful opportunity for the soccer
enthusiasts among us. This offer, I putting out to not only the HYSLeague
members, but to the homeschooling community at large because I am certain
that there are several of us out there who would love to participate in
this wonderful opportunity.

Wednesday, October 3rd Chicago Fire celebrate their 15th year anniversary.
With many activities, and a game that evening, they have offered to sell
tickets to a large group of us at a discounted price. If we have at least
100 people interested purchasing tickets at $14 per person, we would also
be given the opportunity to play on their field before the game! They are
also offering a parking pre-purchase price of $12 (over reg. $15). The time
I was given was 3:00pm for this date, but will verify because I see the
game is at 7p. (It could be that we are invited by 3pm to the festivities
going on that day, and will have our pre-game play on the field during this
3-7pm slot.)

I’m just, first, putting feelers out there to see if we can even come close
to 100 people. If this seems to be something of interest, and we would have
100 to take advantage of this opportunity, then I would move forward to
finalize plans with Chicago Fire.

If you think your family would like to participate, could you please email
me asap: mommy@nakitababy.com and let me know how many tickets you’d
purchase for this event?

Thank you!

Just gotta say “thanks.”

When I started this site 3 years ago it grew out of a passion for homeschooling. Of course, my passion is driven in part by my faith in Jesus Christ that I do not feel could be fully passed on to my kids if I didn’t get the chance to live it out in front of them 24/7. I fail, I learn, I grow. Through it all they see that learning doesn’t quit when you graduate and homeschooling is a whole-family, whole-life endeavor.

Thank you for sharing my enthusiasm. Sharing this site with your friends, relatives, and fellow-homeschoolers at co-ops and support groups.  Thank you for sharing with the rest of us about events, activities, support groups, contact information, ideas, and more.

Looking forward to the continued growth of this site as a helpful resource for Chicago area homeschoolers, and thank you for making that possible!
