themselves as parents who homeschool their children and completing the
Educator Discount Card application here at the store. No letters or
other information is required for homeschooling parents to participate
in this discount program.

Check this out at the Chicago location at 1441 West Webster Avenue.

You could also follow up with other local Barnes and Noble stores if this is not convenient.

SELAH meet and greet

Christian Life Center in Tinley Park is sponsoring
a Homeschool Support Group and their first “Meet-n-Greet” is the first
step in offering a central support group in the Chicago south suburbs.
Join us as we discuss the needs of our south side homeschoolers: i.e.
curriculum fairs & teacher workshops, student science and history
fairs, family movie nights, performance platforms (fine arts, poetry
slams, modest fashion show, etc.), family banquet and dance, and end
of year graduation service.

Open to all families that practice homeschooling or are interested in
finding out more about it! They will meet the first Friday of each
month throughout the school year for a family activity and the third
Tuesday of each month for a “Mom’s Night Out.” (No meetings in
December.)

First meeting this Friday, October 2nd at Christian Life Center, 6363

Attention: Safety gear will be provided. No open toe shoes can be worn. Students under 18 years old must be accompanied by parents or teachers. Groups of more than five persons must register in advance.

This event has been designed with home schoolers in mind, since it provides a good science lesson for the kids and a field trip all in one! Each adult and child will be able to make a metal trinket in a sand mold and the older kids can even pour their own metal. Open to the public.

Homeschool Spelling Bee in South Suburbs

Dear Families,
I wanted to let you know that it is time to sign up for the 4th annual Homeschool Spelling Bee! We need to sign our group up and pay in the next few weeks (SCRIPPS charges $136 per group but thankfully ComEd underwrites some of the cost). Each family cost would be $10 no matter how many students per family participate.
So . . . if you are interested in the SCRIPPS official Homeschool Spelling Bee sponsored by this group of local homeschoolers please contact me at : dcjohnson723@yahoo.com The Bee is open to students (not participating in any other Bees) in grades 1 – 8. On one afternoon we usually run one Bee with the lower level grades (K-3 or 4) and one with the higher level grades (3/4 – 8). The winner of our Bee is eligible to keep moving on to the district & regional Bees with an opportunity to head to Washington D.C. and the Nationals!! Our winners the last 3 years have enjoyed the district Bees.
The Bee will be held the second Thursday of December, Dec. 10. We will be at Moraine Valley Church in Palos Heights again this year. When you register with me, I will send you an email with the password info that gives access to the official website, spelling lists, rules, fun games to help with practice, etc.
If you “think” that you aren’t a good speller, THEN HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO SPELL EVEN BETTER!! Nothing like a little friendly competition to spur each other on to greatness! Friends and family may come to cheer you on, and it is a fun afternoon together! Last year we had such a fun and encouraging crowd and it was great!!
Our group needs to be supported by enough families and signed up with fees to me by October 10th! so I will be waiting to hear from YOU!! Please feel free to pass this along to any homeschoolers in the South Suburban area who might be interested. They do need to live in Illinois 🙂
Blessings!
Cindy Johnson

Mock Trial camp coming to Wheaton

Received via email:
Hello,

My name is Drew Chambers and I am an NFCA/Stoa alumnus, now attending Wheaton College. I wanted to contact Ignite to let you all know of what I think is a fantastic opportunity for high school speech & debate competitors!

In high school, I had the privilege of competing in the national mock trial league, in addition to other styles of forensics, and I can definitely say that doing so made me a more well-rounded communicator. After competing in high school I joined the Wheaton mock trial team and have so much enjoyed my team competing in college.

This October our mock trial team is hosting a mock trial camp for high school individuals or teams! Our team is ranked 13th in the country (out of 650 teams) and #1 in Illinois and the camp will be coached by our experienced competitors. The camp cost $120 per individual and includes two days of coaching, all meals during the camp, and a t-shirt; a really fantastic value especially compared to some private debate coaching or summer camps. All proceeds go to fund our team travels during the competitive season.

I would encourage you to check out our brochure here and please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns!

Thank you so much,

Drew
