TOS Crew Reviews coming

Last year I had the joy of reviewing products for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine Crew (aka TOS Crew). Now and then I posted those reviews here, but most of them found their home on my regular blog, Delighting in His Richness.

This year, as I head into my second year on the voyage, I decided to relocate the reviews to this website as they pertain to homeschooling and homeschoolers and I thought my readers here would benefit more from hearing about all of these great products.

So, starting sometime this summer you will begin to see reviews on this site every week or so. These reviews will share with you my honest opinion about the products, and how they worked (or didn’t) in a real live homeschooling family’s home. I’ll tell you what we loved and what we struggled with, and of course I’ll tell you where you can get your hands on them as well.

While you are waiting, let me share my absolute favorites from this past year (click the product name to see my review):

All About Spelling — I love, love, love this program! We received Levels 1 and 2 and also the corresponding readers. This program was amazing for my middle daughter that I started it with and we can’t wait to use it with the rest of the younger kids as well. This program is absolutely amazing and helps bring reading, writing, and spelling all together and helps kids really make connections that make sense.

Super Star Speech — Many products are available to homeschoolers for math, reading, spelling, science, and history. Even music, foreign language, and geography make a good showing. But, what about Speech Therapy? I was definitely intimidated to tackle this one at home. Super Star Speech has made it easy and the success we have found through the tools, knowledge, and methods spelled out in this book have been impressive. Excellent resource!

Mystery of History 3 from Bright Ideas Press — History can either be dry or too detailed, but this series has found the great balance of offering enough information to keep you interested, and enough hands on activities to make it stick. I definitely plan on purchasing other volumes from this series when we finish up with this one. Great material, beautiful text, and lots of great resources to go along with it on an accompanying CD.

There were lots of other great products, and you can see all my reviews here, and be sure to check back in here for other great reviews in the year ahead.

Disclaimer: These products were provided to me free of charge as part of my participation in The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew. I received no additional compensation and the opinions expressed here come from my personal experiences and sincere thoughts.

This workshop is geared for the beginner dance student with little or no dance experience although it is open to the intermediate dancer as well, who may want to improve upon their technique. Ballet being foundational to all other forms of dance, this class will develop basic ballet skills through barre work, center work and simple combinations. We will use what we learn to do a combination modern-jazz-hip-hop type dance set to popular Christian music with modest choreography. MELISSA MARTIN began her fine arts training at a young age. She studied piano and later flute at the Chicago Conservatory. Most of her early dance training was with her mother at Valley Dance Center. Advancing rapidly  she continued  to study at many well  known studios in Chicago including the Ruth Page Foundation, Chicago City Ballet, Ellis-Duboulay and Elizabeth Boitsov. Madame Boitsov is a graduate of the State Ballet School and State Bolshoi University in Moscow. Melissa was selected to train for the International Ballet Competition and studied in New York City with Madame Darvash. She has appeared in the full length productions of Cinderella, Coppelia, La Fille Mal Gardee, and the Nutcracker and has performed solo variations from ballets such as Don Quixote. At the age of twelve Melissa held the leading role in a student production of the Wild Swans. She then appeared with Rudolph Nureyev and the Zurich Opera Ballet. She started teaching in 1990 and especially loves imparting excellent technique to her students. As a teenager and after a dramatic transformation that took place in her parents’ lives when they dedicated themselves to God, Melissa accepted Christ as her own personal Savior and Lord. She is married to David Martin and the mother of 11 children.

Ashworth

Ashworth approached me about helping them get the word out about their great program. I know many people find it challenging to teach all the subjects well at home as their homeschoolers head into high school . Ashworth offers online and correspondence courses that can help you meet this need.

Consumer Business Enhancement Session in Gurnee

Paul Tait has a passion for the home school community.  He is retired after spending 18 years at Christian Liberty.  He is organizing a workshop series designed for High School students and their teaching adult.  The workshops will focus on consumer business issues that he feels are applicable for “real life” training.

The details of this workshop are listed below.

The Veritas Center invites

high school age home schoolers and their teaching parents to a

CONSUMERS’ BUSINESS ENHANCEMENT session (CBES)

Saturday, June 26th at 1:00pm.

The speaker will be Frank O’Connell who has 40 years experience in the property and casualty insurance and reinsurance industry.  He has held five Senior management positions both marketing and underwriting of commercial accounts with a major insurance carrier.  He retired in 1994 and then worked three years as a consultant conducting underwriting examinations of insurance companies for an East coast reinsurer.  Frank holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter Designation which is awarded only after completion of five years of studies and examinations.  He will discuss the personal automobile and Homeowners policies as well the purpose of insurance and its regulation by the state insurance departments.

A question and answer period will follow in which current events, government’s policies/actions as well as hidden and unintended consequences may be discussed.

The goal of this, and future sessions, will be to better prepare students for civic responsibilities and challenges while maintaining personal time and fiscal stewardship in accordance with biblical teaching.

Teaching parents are urged to attend so they can better integrate the materials presented with their academic studies and discussions.

Mr. O’Connell has graciously waived the standard speaker fees and is willing to take whatever funds are raised after covering the expenses at the Center.

Suggestions are requested for future sessions which will be announced over the next few months.

Please RSVP to: VeritasCenter@gmail.com. Please provide Participant first and last names, address, and phone number.

Please refer any questions about the series to:

Bass Pro Shop family camp

Came across this info at The Happy Housewife‘s blog:

From June 5- July 11, every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday there are free activities at Bass Pro Shops from noon to 6 pm. Activities include: pet safety, fishing basics, archery, shooting basics, animal identification, making s’mores, plants & insects, hiking and much more.

Looks like a lot of fun activities for the family. Check out the Bass Pro website for more information, and be sure to call ahead to confirm what you will find in the store that you plan to visit.  It does say the Chicago location does not have a shooting gallery, but it seems the other activities should be there.

  • a free download of you on a Field and Stream cover
Looks like a great time for families and kids of all ages.

Volleyball camps

The following information is from Coach Lum at Westminster Christian School in Elgin. Feel free to contact him for more information about these opportunities for various ages to improve their volleyball skills and have some fun in the process.

I am the head varsity girls’ volleyball coach at Westminster Christian School (WCS) and wanted to share with you information about my Summer volleyball camps.  I am coaching various camps for girls and boys from grades 1 through high school at WCS (http://www.athletics2000.com/westminster/registration, scroll to the bottom) and the Top Flight Volleyball Club for outdoor (http://www.topflightvbc.com/campsclinics/docs/0910summer.pdf) and indoor (http://www.topflightvbc.com/campsclinics/jindoorcampsclinics.php).  Both facilities are in Elgin.

Of special interest though are the camps for volleytots and junior beach volleyball.  Volleytots start as early as the first week of June with my WCS Little Warrior camp.  If you know any friends with little girls or boys (grades 1-4) interested in playing volleyball, let them know it’s available.  We use a lighter ball, lower net, and smaller court to help the kids be as successful as possible.  Drills are shortened to hold the interest of the kids better also.

Top Flight junior beach camps start the second week of June and the last one starts the beginning of August.  You play either 2’s or 4’s, your choice.

Check out these unique opportunities for kids to improve their volleyball skills and IQ.  Thanks for your time.
