We are the West Suburban Home School Band, also known as the WSHSB. Our organization follows the model of a community band and includes all wind instruments, woodwinds and brass, as well as a full percussion section. There are 4 band levels, Cadet, completely beginner, to highest level, the Symphonic Band, comprised of students who are in high school, qualified junior high students, and adult musicians. Membership has grown from 46 students/26 families in 2001, to over 150 members from over 80 families in 2014-2015. We are located in suburban Illinois, about an hour away from Chicago, DuPage County.
Our band open house takes place on April 9th, 2015, from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 30 W 350 E Army Trail Rd, Wayne, IL 60184.
We encourage anyone interested in a band program for their children to come and check our group out.If there is any more opportunity for spreading the word about our organization, please let us know.

High School/College level Sign Classes
Learn American Sign Language (ASL) as your foreign language for High School foreign language credit. The book we will be using will be at a College level. This will be an academic focused class to be able to receive credits for your transcripts and with the potential to CLEP out of these same classes at College.
My name is Stacey Borrego and I have been involved in the deaf community for over 20 years as an interpreter and teaching Sign Language classes. I was immersed for a year in the deaf culture traveling and living with a deaf ministry called Deaf Opportunity Outreach (DOOR) where I gained insurmountable experience in this beautiful language called American Sign Language! I have completed the Interpreter program at Waubonsee Community College.
Since 2005 I have been teaching Sign Language classes to individuals of all ages, Children to adults. Currently I am an educational and freelance interpreter.
The cost of these classes will be $125 per student. Location will be: 737 Hamilton Way Batavia The dates of the classes will be every Tuesdays from 6:00 – 7:00pm (below is a list of the dates):
1/20; 1/27; 2/3; 2/10; 2/17; 2/24; 3/3; 3/10; 3/17; 3/24; 4/7; 4/14; 4/21; 4/28; 5/5; 5/12; 5/19
In addition to these classes we will be going to some deaf events at different times. This will be optional on different days.

Transcript software
With high school comes the somewhat daunting task of preparing a transcript. Personally I have enjoyed Homeschool Tracker. I have used it for about 5 years now and while it had a bit of a learning curve, I really enjoy all the different uses of the program for keeping track of all my kids’ academic progress. This used to be a free trial download that I enjoyed so much I bought the full version. Now, as so many programs do, it requires a membership.
I recently heard about another more affordable option through HSLDA.
Fast Transcripts gives homeschool parents the ability to create professional high school transcripts with error-free GPA calculation. Cost is only $16 per year per student ($12 for HSLDA members). For families like mine, it would be better to purchase the program for $110 ($96 for HSLDA members) and own it for life.

Last December, our friends at Code.org launched the Hour of Code. This year we are excited to offer a bunch of new ways for your child to participate!
What is the Hour of Code?
The Hour of Code is an hour-long introduction to computer programming designed to demystify coding and show students that everyone can learn the basics. At Khan Academy, we’ve crafted several custom-made tutorials for your child that require no prior experience.
Hour of Drawing with Code: Your child will learn to program using JavaScript, one of the world’s most popular programming languages via two great options:
- Drag-and-drop: block-based coding for younger children with less typing skills and children on tablet devices (ages 8+).
- Typing: keyboard-based coding for older children (ages 10+).
Hour of Webpages: Your child will learn to make their own webpages using the basics of HTML and CSS (ages 10+).
Hour of Databases: Your child will learn the fundamentals of databases using SQL to create tables, insert data into them, and do basic querying (ages 12+).

Six Flags Read to Succeed
Six Flags Read to Succeed Program is open for registration.
We get lots of freebies for all the reading that goes on around our house, but these tickets are the most frequently used. We rarely miss a year to take advantage of this program or the free tickets we get through it. Even though the water park is an addition fee now, we still love our day together at Six Flags.
Sign up now and be sure to return to the site after your kids are done with the reading to log their hours so you will receive your free tickets via email.
