This workshop is geared for the beginner dance student with little or no dance experience although it is open to the intermediate dancer as well, who may want to improve upon their technique. Ballet being foundational to all other forms of dance, this class will develop basic ballet skills through barre work, center work and simple combinations. We will use what we learn to do a combination modern-jazz-hip-hop type dance set to popular Christian music with modest choreography. Students will learn the joy of dance while learning proper technique and have the satisfaction of using what they have learned all while glorifying God.

MELISSA MARTIN began her fine arts training at a young age. She studied piano and later flute at the Chicago Conservatory. Most of her early dance training was with her mother at Valley Dance Center. Advancing rapidly she continued to study at many well known studios in Chicago including the Ruth Page Foundation, Chicago City Ballet, Ellis-Duboulay and Elizabeth Boitsov. Madame Boitsov is a graduate of the State Ballet School and State Bolshoi University in Moscow. Melissa was selected to train for the International Ballet Competition and studied in New York City with Madame Darvash. She has appeared in the full length productions of Cinderella, Coppelia, La Fille Mal Gardee, and the Nutcracker and has performed solo variations from ballets such as Don Quixote. At the age of twelve Melissa held the leading role in a student production of the Wild Swans. She then appeared with Rudolph Nureyev and the Zurich Opera Ballet. She started teaching in 1990 and especially loves imparting excellent technique to her students. As a teenager and after a dramatic transformation that took place in her parents’ lives when they dedicated themselves to God, Melissa accepted Christ as her own personal Savior and Lord. She is married to David Martin and the mother of 11 children.

My name is Brantly Millegan. My beautiful wife Krista and I were married last summer and are expecting our
first child at the end of May.
This May I will be graduating from Wheaton College with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy.
I was a Teacher’s Assistant for three semesters in the Philosophy department. For two of those semesters I was a
Teacher’s Assistant for the longest standing full professor in the Philosophy department and current department chair. I was a Research Assistant for that same professor for one semester and aided him in editing and researching two books he was writing.

I have filled in for a Philosophy professor in his absence several times and taught college philosophy classes.
I also have a great deal of experience working with high school and middle school age students. I was a paid intern under the high school pastor of First Baptist Church of Eugene (Oregon) for two summers.

If you have a hands-on kid at home you might enjoy taking advantage of Home Depot’s monthly kid workshops.

This program is designed for this purpose:

The Home Depot’s Kids Workshops offer useful projects including the creation of toolboxes, fire trucks and mail organizers, as well as more educational projects, such as a window birdhouse, bughouse or Declaration of Independence frame kit.

The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children.

In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement pin.

These generally take place on the first Saturday of each month from 9-12. Contact your local Home Depot for more information or to confirm participation. This coming Saturday they should be constructing a rain gauge. Sounds like a perfect project as we head into the spring season. Kids 5-12 would benefit most from these workshops.

You may recall from your PE days gone by the Presidential Fitness program. You can use this program with your own students today as well.

The challenge is designed to motivate kids to get in the habit of regular exercise. The President’s Fitness Challenge website has lots of information available. They even have patches and certificates for you to order that you can use as rewards for your child as they set and achieve their goals.

If you are not familiar with this program, here is a little information from their site:

The Physical Fitness Test recognizes students for their level of physical fitness in 5 events: curl-ups or partial curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/walk, pull-ups or right angle push-ups, and V-sit or sit and reach.

The Physical Fitness Test offers three awards for students who meet the program qualifications:

The Presidential Physical Fitness Award
This award recognizes students who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness. Boys and girls who score at or above the 85th percentile (based on the 1985 School Population Fitness Survey) on all five events are eligible for this award.

The National Physical Fitness Award
Students who score above the 50th percentile on all five events – demonstrating a basic, yet challenging, level of physical fitness – are eligible for this award.

The Participant Physical Fitness Award
Students whose scores fall below the 50th percentile on one or more events receive this award for taking part in all five events of the Physical Fitness Test.

For competitive kids they might enjoy seeing how they rank in the national standings. For your non-competitive kids, or those just setting health goals, you might like them to just work to improve their own scores over the course of the program. Most of these activities you could conduct in your living room, basement or back yard.

Physical Education is often an area that homeschoolers struggle to consistently incorporate into their school day. This might be an easy way to add some structure to your activity and with some effort your kids can make some progress in their own health and fitness. Might not be bad for the teacher to join right in either . . .
